Visual Journal
2010-Present
Instead of keeping the usual sketchbooks, my students and I keep what are now being called "visual journals" . The difference between a sketchbook and a visual journal is simply that sketchbooks are for sketching, and visual journals are for everything. Writing notes, recording insights, sketching, collaging, painting, keeping inspirational materials etc. One of the most important things to remember about a visual journal is that it's a handy place to try new things.
I constructed the red book in a bookbinding class in University. It is a paper case binding with heavy, hand-made paper and hand-stitched headbands. It is well-worn now as I carry it with me often and fill it with artwork and memories.

Artist Statement:
I didn’t discover that I had an interest in art until I began my college career, and I have been struggling to find my place in the art world ever since. I started this series at the beginning of last winter semester at the same time that I began my foray into Art Education. Once I started down this path to becoming a teacher, I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it. I am especially interested in the transformative power of education. As my understanding increases, new possibilities are opened up to me and my life and opportunities change. My work has taken off as I have made these discoveries in my life.
My basic sculptural form evolved through experimentation and abstraction. I love the play that has developed between organic and functional, the heavy, mechanical exterior versus the bright and more human interior. These pieces have become expressions of my exploration of transformation.
